To understand the mechanism of action of Viagra we have to understand what erectile dysfunction is and how nitrous oxide is important for an individual to attain an adequate erection. Normally it is the release of nitrous oxide in the Corpus cavernosum, the erectile tissue of the penis that causes activation of the enzyme required for the production of a chemical cGMP. It is this cGMP that brings about the relaxation of the smooth muscles in the erectile tissue of the penis, causing an increased flow of blood, thus helping us attain an erection.
Nature has also provided us with the enzyme that is aimed to degrade cGMP, ensuring that we don’t have an erection all the time. This is where the Viagra plays its role. It actually inhibits the enzyme required for the degradation of cGMP, causing an increase in its level. This increased level of cGMP in the erectile tissue of the penis will ultimately cause relaxation of the smooth muscles that allow increased blood flow and helps us attain an erection even in individuals who are no longer capable of it.
Nitrates such as Isosorbide dinitrate are used to treat angina and certain other cardiovascular problems. They relieve the symptoms of angina by causing dilation of the vessels supplying the heart and increasing the blood flow to it. Nitrates cause lowering of the blood pressure as a side effect but this is usually not significant if they are used alone. The problem occurs when you start taking other medications such as Viagra that also tend to lower the blood pressure. This may cause a sudden but serious fall in blood pressure that could be lethal for the patient. The whole point of discussion here is that Viagra can have some seriously dangerous drug interactions which you can surely avoid just by telling your doctor about the medications you are already taking.
Viagra may cause a prolonged painful erection lasting more than 4 hours, a condition referred to as priapism. In the case of priapism, a buildup of impure or oxygen-poor blood in the erectile tissue of the penis may damage it, causing permanent impairment of the erection in the future. It requires emergency medical attention and this is why you are advised to immediately contact your doctor if your erection does not settle down.
